Allegheny Hazardous Materials
General Awareness Training Course

Course Objectives

Much of the material being covered in this course is dictated by the government training requirements. First, the course is designed to help satisfy the following:

U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). 49 CFR 172.700 describes how employers must train employees who are any part in offering a hazardous material for shipment. This training must be repeated every three years. Among those employees who could be considered covered by such requirements are: Those who load or unload hazardous material, those who pack hazardous material (even if to return to manufacturer), those who transport hazardous material over a public highway, those who prepare shipping papers, and those who specify and/or effect packaging of hazardous materials for shipment. This course provides the information necessary to comply with the DOT HM-126F "General Awareness" of hazardous materials.

United Parcel Service Effective September 1, 1998, any company shipping hazardous material through UPS (except ORM-D ground shipments) must have a contract with the carrier. One of the contract requirements is that a certain amount of training has been engaged for the shipping of hazardous materials. UPS requirements for this training are covered.

US Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA). The training on the use and handling of hazardous material is part of the requirements of the OSHA hazard communication standards for employers. This course provides "general awareness" of OSHA safety requirements in regard to hazardous materials and hazardous waste.

EPA and State Regulatory Requirements. Provides general awareness regarding regulations and procedures involving hazardous waste.

In Addition To These General Requirements…

This course addresses site and job specific questions regarding hazardous materials:
