Take
a few moments to read while our dramatic pictures of "The Chimney Cliffs" load
on your screen.
No, not the Cliffs of Moher off Ireland's west coast...but The Chimney Cliffs, on the south shore of Lake Ontario, just northwest of Wolcott, in Wayne County, New York!
Well off the beaten track, this impressive land formation is ignored by most tourist books. Leave it to the Allegheny field staff, who serve several important customers in Wayne County, to find this unusual site.
The area borders the eastern edge of Sodus Bay (which is a popular tourist attraction). This series of natural land formations created by receding glaciers is on protected State land but is not a state park. You won't find it listed in any of the popular State travel guides.
From Wolcott (just off Route 104) go northwest on Lummisville Road to Garner Road. Proceed along Garner Road following a couple signs you'll notice pointing the way to Chimney Cliffs. The area to the south of the cliffs is a mix between fruit orchards and minor forest.
Enter the cliffs area at a public beach front. With Lake levels low this year, you'll have no trouble walking the beach to see the cliffs.
The
Cliffs extend for about a half mile along the lake. Each has a somewhat different
configuration, the tourist can plan on about an hour to look over the site if there
is no time allocated to take rock samples.
As you travel to the area from Wolcott, plan to make a short stop in the town square to view Wolcott's famous statue, "The Enchanted Fountain."
Our picture below, doesn't do it full justice. We don't have a report for sure, but we believe the water being used to spray the goddess is being recycled. And speaking about recycling, Allegheny can provide cost-effective recycling for many types of hazardous and non-hazardous industrial waste. Contact us to inquire about specifics.
