Walton, NY is a delightful little community in Delaware
County along the foothills of the Catskill Mountains.
Walton is just far enough north to escape most of the New York City influx during summer. There are no resort hotels here for City millionaires to hold court. It's a rural farming area with an attractive "Small Town USA" image.
The Town of Walton's greatest asset is its friendly people (population about 5,000). After that, it's famous as "The Scarecrow Capital of the World!" But this being Walton, even the scarecrows are friendly. In the frame left, that's "Jake" pictured on one of the utility pole banners you'll spot as you enter town along NY State Rte. 206. The population of scarecrows soars toward the end of October as Halloween approaches.
Our Allegheny Environmental crew of one drove into Walton pre-dawn on a Tuesday morning, motoring down Route 206 after making an exit off Interstate 88. The first stop was Pa's Diner --- a real slice of the 1950's. It's also a good place for breakfast and filled with helpful Walton boosters to tell where to best meet all the scarecrows and see other attractions around town.

We only spent a few days here but can tell you this
community is a joy to walk around, shop in, and visit. Of course, scarecrows are
everywhere!
The first thing you notice when walking along the main Delaware Street is that the scarecrows are posted where you'd expect to find parking meters. By the way, if you do stop to shop, a "must see" is the Country Emporium a massive four-story brick Georgian landmark, portions of which date back to the 1700's. Today it is a wonderfully restored upscale marketplace offering something for everyone; gourmet foods, furniture, china, men's collectibles, and several "Christmas Rooms." The slogan for this business could well be the slogan for Walton: "A Step Back In Time To The Way It Used To Be."
Walton is on a branch of the Delaware River. Associate this with hills and valleys, a few industries, schools and churches, and you have a picture ready for Norman Rockwell to paint --- or in this case ---our Allegheny field chemist to capture with a camera for this feature.
And what was Allegheny Environmental doing in Walton? You'd be surprised! We're in hundreds of communities in three states doing small jobs and big projects. Hazardous Material training and special consulting. Cleaning up and setting up with a full menu of environmental services.
The town's library is an architectural masterpiece. It was funded by
Walton's first postmaster who went on to become the first Mayor of Chicago. When he
passed on, he didn't forget his roots.
The estate of William B. Ogden provided for the construction of this community treasure in 1896. The building was constructed of native blue stone taken partly from nearby quarries. It's listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

And so is Allegheny Environmental Services!
