The George M. Southard Elementary School
6385 Locust Street Extension        Telephone:  439-6466

The Southard School is one of the Lockport School District's newest elementary schools.  It is located south of the city limits in the Town and is positioned to primarily service students in the school district residing in the South Lockport area including the very large populations of apartment complexes along Robinson Road and in the mobile home "villages" off of South Transit Road.   Almost the entire school population is brought in by bus. The classroom facility itself is not pictured as it is the "usual" one-story modern complex pretty much without any special character.  The school's major claim to fame is its expensive, state-of-the-art playground, located behind the school and open year around to children.   The playground is fashioned after the design of famed Ithaca playground architect, Robert Leathers.

It's a primarily (expensive, heavy-duty) wood playground with the appearance of a fort from the outside. Inside there are a number of climbing, swinging, and "hide 'n seek" adventures awaiting the children.  On our inside view below a portion of the rear of the school is visible in the background.
