The Value Of Life

Work on a bridge in the Montgomery Township in New Jersey was halted this summer because it is turtle mating season.
In Los Angeles, physicians donated their time and $1.5-million was spent in an effort to successfully separate one-year-old co-joined twins who were flown in from Guatemala.
In Orleans County a woman, employed by the Sheriff's Department, who had lived with a man for 18 years admitted shooting (and killing) him in the back of the head.  Her defense for the murder charge was the claim of "abuse" over the 18 year period.  Her sobbing testimony before a jury turned the trick.  They declared her "not guilty."
In Philadelphia, a father who was willing to take full or partial custody of his son had to fight for the right to stop the abortion of the unborn.

All four stories appeared in the news in the same month.  They underscore the schizophrenia of our society when it comes to determining the value of human life.

It is a great time in America to be a turtle or an eagle or a snail darter.
It is a fair time to be a medical phenomenon.
It is a risky time to be a man who incurs the ire of a woman with good "presentation skills."
It is a deadly time to be an unborn child.

In Lockport...A Path To Peace

We hear the talk of "peace initiatives" to resolve world conflicts most every day in the media.   In Lockport peace efforts among local neighbors seem to be a daily need.  While world leaders may seek a Nobel Prize for their efforts, local peacemakers more simply just seek to "get along."   For Christians the path to peace is readily identified.  Christ said, You shall love your neighbor as yourself  (Mt 22:39)  For others there may  be the need for peacemakers in the form of diplomats and policemen.  For the Christians of Lockport, however, Christ is the Great Peacemaker and His words are the way.   When we ignore His words, we disregard the path to peace...here, there, and everywhere.

Reminding us of this, the Young Woman's Christian Association (YWCA) at Lockport has erected a Peace Dove at the entry path to its center at Cottage and Walnut Streets.  At the base of the display, a small plaque tells how one young woman tried to relate to Christ's instructions with a simple poem.

Let There Be Peace

Let there be peace on earth
and let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
the peace that was meant to be.

With God as our Father
brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me.
Let this be the moment now.
With every step I take
let this be my solemn vow;

To take each moment and live
each moment in peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth
and let it begin with me.

A Solution To The AIDS Problem

Millions of dollars have been spent in Niagara County on the problems associated with AIDS and the HIV virus.  Multiple tax-supported agencies duplicate services of prevention education, testing and treatment/care.   A publicly funded health education industry has been generated, supported by tax dollars.   The cost of health care and health insurance for all have been increased as a result.

Do you remember that a few years ago a former President offered this counsel on how to handle the problems of AIDS?

He said, "It's quite simple.  Behave yourself!"   The next day nearly every newspaper in the country ridiculed him. They didn't contradict him, they didn't say, "You don't have the right answer."  They laughed at him.

Yet if Jesus were to be asked the same question today, surely His answer would be much the same.   The response by some in media might also be the same.

Many of us seem to have lost the sense of reality of sin, responsibility, and consequences for our actions.

There always seemed to be a need
for reckoning in early days.
What came in equaled what went out
like the oscillating ocean waves.
...All things had to balance out.
