Pictured here are three specimens collected in the Alden NY area. They
are of Devonian origin and are marcasite nodules which crystallized around various
nucleating bodies such as the rolled up trilobite seen in the center. Breaking open
the nodules occasionally reveals a braciopod, ccephalopod, or other creature, but usually
nothing at all visible. The long specimen on the left probably crystallized around a
wisp of seaweed.
The mineral marcasite is alternate crystalline form of iron sulfide with the usual form
being iron pyrite or "fools gold". The nodules are easily found in the
collecting area provided you have a hammer and
chisel or rock hammer.
This trio of fossils from the Devonian time period (which follows the Silurian
period in the Paleozoic age) was found at Hamburg NY. The complete nearly perfect
trilobite is of the Phacops family. The other trilobite is rolled up in a defensive
posture, much like that of the present day cousin, the pill bug. The third fossil is
a brachiopod of the Athyris family. These are very plentiful fossils and are
relatively
easy to find at the collecting location in Hamburg (if you are willing to do a little
creek walking).
