A Mix of Information, Commentary, and
Pictorials
of the Greater Lockport, NY area
The Lockport Home Page, www.Lockport-NY.com , in cyber publication since 1996, is the central Lockport website for hundreds of Lockport area destinations on the World Wide Web. Here, all together at one website, are hundreds of "pages" of news, tourist guides, photographs, links, reference, features, opinions, and humor. More than a Home Page for one group, it's Today's ...and Yesterday's...Picture of Lockport. The section below answer many questions regarding the website and how you can contribute to it and use it.
Who we are. The Lockport Home Page is locally owned and operated. Not a proxy for someone who lives out-of-town, the Lockport Page is composed by folks who live in, and grew up in, Lockport. The Webmaster and Editor is Bob Rooney. This is not a business. It is a service. We are not affiliated with any organization, labor, industrial, business, education, religious or political lobby. A financial subsidy for this service comes only in the form of low-priced paid advertising links to area business, all of which are plainly (and gratefully) acknowledged on the front page, and, donations from readers.
Asking Questions. You may e-mail us as a last resort after failing to find the information you seek among all the pages here or links elsewhere. Most questions should probably go to the Lockport Library, an area tourism or historical society, or someone engaged in genealogical search. Consult the Lockport Links page and also the complete Website Directory. Time restraints prevent us from writing term papers, searching for lost relatives, doing genealogical research, checking past death records, or doing old newspaper searches etc. Use our directories and link pages to locate those who can help. Remember we also have published pages that you may submit to such as Lost Lockportians, Class Reunions, Special Announcements, and E-Mail To The Editor. These pages are read by thousands every week. Sometimes if an editor immediately knows the answer to your question when you submit to one of these pages, you may get a direct reply and your item may not be published. Our normal way of helping is to present these resources to you. If your questions are of a confidential nature, or, if all other resources fail, we are your "ace in the hole." You may e-mail to: Info@Lockport-NY.com
There is no automatic way to submit anything for instant
publication.
Everything goes through a personal edit and verification.
Your views. We are happy to publish views of various segments of the Lockport community. We welcome, too, comments from those around the world. The main vehicle for this is E-Mail To The Editor. For this, contact us by sending e-mail to: Editor@Lockport-NY.com Unless you indicate in the text of your message "NOT FOR PUBLICATION" anything sent to this e-mail address is considered released for publication. Please make it easy for us to reproduce your comments by keeping in mind that we use computer "copy and paste" techniques to transfer your message to the published page. Please use PLAIN TEXT in your message. That is, avoid all kinds of fancy fonts, stationery, themes, colors, all capitals, or other "enhancements." Plain old standard ASCII-e-mail text with the Times New Roman font is what we like to get. Do not send attached files or photos without checking with us in advance. Allow several days for publication. Your message will be confirmed back to you by e-mail. Please include, as a minimum, your full name and full e-mail address. If you wish to remain anonymous or use a "screen name" you may do so (but we wish you wouldn't). However, we still need your full name for our records and so that we may contact you if needed. We reserve the right to edit and/or reject everything. To avoid editing try to avoid name-calling, or unsubstantiated claims on controversial, especially personal, issues. We don't wish to publish profanity or "raw" language. Please try to understand.
News, Publicity, Tips submission.
We solicit news in the form of press releases or other written form from business,
organizations, government, politicians, and individuals. The preferred form of
submission is exactly as described above in Your Views; send by E-Mail to: Editor@Lockport-NY.com We
understand many may make up a Press Release for distribution to all media at once and that
a re-type process to e-mail may not be practical. If you have the material in
computer text you may be able to "copy and paste" to an e-mail form. Or
send as an attached (Microsoft) WORD file. Also, we can take your material by FAX
(24/7) to: 716-433-2358. When submitting by FAX, please be
sure your printed page uses the equivalent of 12-point type or larger because FAX
transmissions tend to smear and make it difficult for our OCR unit to copy the
output. If we must retype your submission there may be a substantial delay in
publication. We discourage news or press releases by s-mail. (It's the 21st
Century!!!). However, if that's the mode you must use, it may be sent to us at:
P.O. Box 676
Lockport, NY 14095-0676
Remember, too, a picture always enhances your press or publicity releases. Inquire
on how to send pictures as e-mail attachments to us. If you don't think there is
enough "good news" on the Lockport Home Page---send us some!
Keeping In Touch is our Eastern Niagara County e-mail directory. If you live here---or ever did live here---we welcome your e-mail address to post and share with others. The Lockport E-Mail Directory includes a few devices to stop, or at least reduce, the practice of junk e-mailers of using it as a data base. Submit to: Webmaster@Lockport-NY.com and in the TEXT portion of your message include your full name, your exact e-mail address, and if you wish, a few words to further identify yourself (often graduating class, current city of residence, etc.) Please don't rely on your e-mail address being embedded in the header on your message. Please send your message IN PLAIN TEXT ---no stationary, no color layouts, no illustrations or gimmicks---just plain text. Put all information in the text. Allow several weeks for us to confirm back to you via e-mail and publish.
Sending us pictures. Being
a non-commercial operation, the Lockport Home Page depends in large part on local folks to
submit local pictures to share with thousands of others who visit here weekly. If
you have pictures to share, please inquire first by e-mail. Tell us what the
pictures are of, approximate date etc. We can not publish pictures covered by recent
(unexpired) copyright. We can not publish any pictures from newspaper clippings,
magazines, or brochures (copyright problems, again). Tell us if you have them in a
computer file or if they are on printed paper. We will tell you how to get them to
us. If you have them on paper and are unable to scan them to a .jpg file for
Internet transmission, you may s-mail them to us at:
P.O. Box 676, Lockport, NY 14095-0676.
Please mark envelope "Photographs, Do Not Fold"
We will scan them, and return to you if you wish them back The process takes about a
week--- more if the editor is traveling. If you have them in your computer file as
a standard .jpg file you may send them to us via e-mail file attachment. No ZIP
files. When we reply to your inquiry, we'll advise you of the e-mail address to send
them to. Do not send anything before making an inquiry first. We can not be
responsible for lost pictures sent through the mail. (But let's face it, the mail is quite
safe and we are careful with everything received). To start the process and offer us
your pictures inquire to: Editor@Lockport-NY.com We
normally credit the picture source (your name) when we publish. If you don't want
this please mention when sending the pictures.
Picture Donations. Are you, a member of the family, or a neighbor about to throw out some old pictures taken in Lockport? Please don't! Donate them to the Lockport Home Page! In this way selected items can continue to be shared with other Lockportians around the world for years into the future! If out of town you may send to our Post Office Box 676, Lockport, NY 14095-0676. Or, if you have a large bundle, and you live in the Lockport area, we can make arrangements to pick up. Just inquire by e-mail to: Editor@Lockport-NY.com
Lockport & Niagara County Collectibles. We
solicit clear close-in pictures of your collectibles with a unique Lockport or Niagara
Frontier identification. These pictures along with a description and/or story are
published on our Collectibles
Page. There should be something obvious in the picture or in your written description
that makes the item unique to this area. A picture of a rare bottle used by George
Washington doesn't qualify but a picture of a common Castle's Lockport Dairy milk bottle
does! There must be a local connection! To this we make one exception.
For those in this area who have a truly remarkable collection of some type (coins, cars,
art, autographs, etc.) we would be interested in showing a large photo(s) exhibiting
portions of your collection. Maybe even send the Lockport Page photographer
to take pictures. In any case, the best thing to do is inquire. Tell us what
you have and we'll tell you how to send a picture along to us (See our sending
pictures paragraph immediately above). If you wish, we can
withhold your name from mention. Are you willing to share? Great! Send us the
details to: Editor@Lockport-NY.com
Lockport Home Page Road Show. The editor, and sometimes others, here at the Lockport Home Page are pleased to talk before local groups when schedules can be arranged. The favorite subject is, of course, The Lockport Home Page. The editor, with over 20 years in the news media, can also wax on about "the media business." The Curator of the Lockport Cyber Museum of Rocks, Minerals, & Fossils is frequently out of town but when his schedule permits, is also delighted to speak about our online history museum here at the Lockport website. If you're interested, just inquire to: Editor@Lockport-NY.com
Obituaries, death notices, and memorial tributes. We have published information on area deaths daily since 1996. We wouldn't think of charging for such submissions! Many fail to submit such material because of cost considerations. The Lockport Home Page doesn't seek to sell over the telephone publication space to those who have lost a loved one. We don't charge for these services (after all, we're a service site, not an advertising site).
Funeral directors and families are urged to submit information of Lockportian deaths promptly so that a worldwide readership can be notified as soon as possible. Families should specifically ask their funeral directors to submit this information or do it themselves. Many funeral directors are not yet aware of the need to notify The New Media. Here at the Lockport Home Page we are set up to take this information 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Information is not taken by telephone but only in a written form by E-Mail, E-Mail attachment, or FAX. Photographs will be published if requested.
Death notices are expanded to obituaries when the funeral director or family provides the additional basic information. Our experienced staff will write the obituary. Calling hours are listed (for a limited period) when provided by funeral directors. Submit information of all such material with the key word "death" in the subject line e-mail so that the message will get top priority review. E-Mail is always the fastest way to reach us since staff is not in the office at all hours to collect the output of the FAX machines. There is never a charge for any of these services!
E-mail to: Editor@Lockport-NY.com or by FAX to: 716-433-2358.
Memorial Tributes. The general public is invited to submit a brief written memorial tribute for any Lockportian who has passed on during the period covered by our listings. There is never a charge for these community services. Such submissions are especially sought immediately following the death. For those submitting: include name of deceased, date of death, your name and your E-Mail address. Send to: Editor@Lockport-NY.com
All death related material is published in our Recent Deaths of Lockportians pages (Lockport City and Town) or in our Recent Deaths In The Greater Lockport Area page (outside of Lockport City and Town). These pages also link to those older death notices still on line that go back several years.
Commercial & Businesses: There is a small fee for a business to have their website promoted and linked here at the high-traffic Lockport Home Page. Such fees, from those who hope to generate revenue from their web presence, is the only means of keeping the out-of-pocket cost to the Lockport Home Page webmaster at a manageable level. www.Lockport-NY.com is a not-for-profit service site...not an advertising site. Yet there is no membership organization to pay the computer, line, equipment, news gathering expense, and ever-increasing (with increasing traffic) data transfer charges. It is hoped to recover most of these costs and help provide funds to improve our service through sponsorship link and promotion fees from commercial business groups in the Lockport area. The fee is modest and the effect is appreciated by thousands of Lockportians here and around the world. For full information please inquire to the Webmaster.
Personal Web Pages: If you have a personal (non-commercial) website and you qualify for listing your e-mail address in our Keeping In Touch section (present or former resident of Eastern Niagara County) we will be happy to add a hyperlink to your personal web page with your name on the Keeping In Touch Page. Please be sure to give us your exact page address and full name along with full e-mail address. We always appreciate a reciprocal link on your page back to this site and Lockport. Please allow at least a week for the link to be established.
A Final Comment
The Lockport Home Page is an all-volunteer operation. Our publication is prepared exclusively by longtime Lockportians. Many may be traveling or working away from our publication office. It may not be possible to give you quick answers to non-urgent questions. Although e-mail is checked several times a day, we prioritize items and many may have to wait some time for action. After the most urgent and important items, other e-mail must wait volunteer time to act on. Thank you for your understanding.
