Here's another of the great aerial photographs taken by Lockport's Dick Gallagher! An unusually large number of recreational boats for a cue on the north side of the canal, just east of the "Upside Down Railway Bridge" awaiting their turn to go through the Lockport Locks on summer afternoon. The camera is looking down on the canal with Market Street shown on the right side of the picture running from the Exchange Street Bridge all the way "up" to Main Street---the heart of Lockport.
This is a
large and exceptionally detailed photo which will require a long load time on your
computer.
At the bottom of the frame, at the intersection of Main and Market Street is the landmark Bewley Building. A bit to the west (left) of there is the public housing, "Urban Park Tower" which was allowed to replace much of the city's commercial downtown, a major Urban Renewal mistake for Lockport.
Further west and to the left of the apartment complex a segment of the city multi-level parking ramp can be seen with a brick floored overlook area for viewing canal traffic. The Lockport Locks hydroelectric generating station is seen in part in the lower left of the frame.
In the top of the frame, the large cleared and paved area on the north side of the canal is the maintenance center for the NYS Canal Authority, including a dry dock.
