Randleigh Farm On Lockport's Chestnut Ridge
Kenan's Scientific Farm Of Yesterday
Animal Hospital Today

Established in 1922, the 475-acres for Randleigh Farm was purchased by Lockportian William Rand Kenan Jr. and developed into one of the world's first scientific dairy farms.  It became a center for annual scientific farming conferences.  At the front of the farm, Kenan opened "The Dairy Inn," pictured below. The tudor style building was a retail ice cream and milk operation which became a Lockport landmark producing the best ice cream (15-20% fat content) in the area. Most Lockportians over 40 can remember the delight of going out to the Dairy Inn and sitting down in the ice cream parlor while watching the Kenan prize-winning cows being milked through the large glass observation windows.  The farm was closed and sold upon Kenan's death in 1965. The prize dairy herd was relocated (as was the name Randleigh Farms) to North Carolina.  Today the property fronting on Route 77, Chestnut Ridge, about 3 miles east of the city limits, serves as an animal hospital.  Most of the property to the rear has been turned into a truck farm, the headquarters for the Relco trucking company which makes runs all over the northeast.  (5/9)
