Lockport Boy In Egypt

It never ceases to amaze us the places in this world that Frank Bredell's Lockport Boy shows up.   The book, now in its fourth printing will be available at Lockport Day in Florida on March 6th.  There will be a limited number of signed-by-author copies on sale.   Below: "Lockport Boy" has become THE thing for camel jockeys to read as they wait for riders near the Great Pyramid in Egypt.

Paul_Oates.jpg (20576 bytes)Lockport's Milkman.  The Lockportian known to thousands of Lockport area radio listeners is putting on a bigger smile than usual these days because his book, A History of Lockport, New York Dairies, 1895-1970, has been selling well since release in late October.

During a recent visit with the Lockport Page photographer, Oates showed off a few of his milk bottle collection and other local dairy collectibles.    Sitting around a table listening to Oates tell the stories of Castle's Citizens Dairy, Gascoyne's, Randleigh Farm, Garlock's, Behm's, The Lockport Dairy, Wyle's, and his own family's Oates Dairy could hold the interest of our photographer for hours.  Especially with milk and cookies provided by Paul's wife, Cheryl.

It's been a labor of love for the past seven years as Oates collected, documented, and wrote the history of Lockport's several operating dairies.  The Oates Dairy goes back to the 1890's.  Paul's great-grandparents, Patrick and Molly Oates who operated the business back in the 30's at 340 East Union Street are pictured on the book's cover.  He's been collecting milk bottles and other Lockport dairy memorabilia since childhood.

You'll want several of Paul's books for holiday gift giving. The book is now on sale at the Niagara County Historical Society gift shop.

Lkpt_Boy_Book_Seller.jpg (55837 bytes)Lockport Boy on sale in India!  The bookseller at the Rambaugh Palace Hotel in Jaipur, India, gave front row space to "Lockport Boy."  The hotel really was a palace in the days of the maharajas.  And the book seller doesn't offer anything he hasn't first read and enjoyed.

For those not on tour through India, Lockport Boy is on sale closer to home. It's now on sold at four Lockport outlets:  Niagara County Historical Society gift shop, Dale Center gift shop,  the gift shop at Lockport Locks & Canal Tours and at Waldenbooks.

It can also be purchased by mail order directly from the publisher.

1999 Lockport "Cat of the Year" has his own copy of Lockport Boy. Say "hello" to Simon The Cat in any of ten languages and he'll respond.  Give him the English voicing of "T-R-E-A-T" and he'll respond enthusiastically.    And bring a copy of Frank Bredell's Lockport Boy into the room and he'll "meow" until you start reading to him.  Lockport reading expert, Dr. Cathy March (one of our Lockport Pagers) is working with Simon in hope that the extraordinary feline may be able to read of the adventures of "The Waterman Street Gang " without help.  Right now, Simon can peruse the book's pictures by himself.
