The Rural Niagara County Town Of Porter:
Refuge For Canadian Immigration,
Center Of Canadian Influence

They used to fly south for the winter.  But various locations around the Niagara Frontier have become so attractive to them that many Canadian Geese are staying here year around.  One such attraction is in the Niagara County Town of Porter.  Here, just a bit east of their giant municipal garbage dump, Modern Disposal Company has built a "replacement" wetlands area just off Porter-Center Road.   The acreage was set up a few years back when Modern was seeking permission to expand their giant dump (a/k/a landfill).  Seems as though some of the land for this project infringed on "wetlands" so the company agreed to establish an alternative wetland estate in the area.  The Canadian Geese couldn't be happier.   There's plenty to eat around here and the giant garbage dump is less than a mile west!

Here the geese can go about their business (romping around on land, floating on water...breeding...and leaving "little cigars" on the land) without interference from man.  The property is posted to keep hunters and everyone else out.

In the eastern background of the view above, the three radio broadcast towers of Niagara County's most power radio station can be seen.

The view on right shows the towers, a bit closer in,out in a field hidden from ground growth.

The 770 kHz AM station uses Niagara County to beam its powerful 50,000-watt signal north, across Lake Ontario, to Toronto, Canada.  Don't listen here for any Niagara County news, however.

Everything is in foreign languages and studios and offices are in Toronto.   Nothing is here except the towers back in a field, a transmitter, and lots of Canadian geese to stand watch. (10/29/00)
