Two Kinds Of Farms In Cambria
Thanks to the United States government Cambria has some acreage devoted to two kinds of farming. You probably imagine fruit farming, vegetable farming, gain farming, livestock farming, etc. That's all what we call agricultural farming. And it's alive and well in Cambria as our Lockport Page photographer noticed Sunday, 10/1 off Upper Mountain Road, near Comstock. In fact the harvest of grain for winter animal feed is being gathered up in the frame shown below.

But what are those upright spikes growing out of the ground? Those, dear friends, are the remains of farming left here by the United States government. It's what is known as an antenna farm. The supports, mostly like telephone poles were used back in the middle of the 20th century to support military radio antenna arrays. Those arrays are down now but the poles remain. Some now support VHF radio antennae in use by local government. This part of Cambria being one of the highest areas in the county it is a good spot to locate Niagara County government radio antennae. Our view above is looking northwest from Comstock Road.
Below is a different view of the same antenna farm, looking southwest from Upper Mountain. The military-built main transmitter building for all these antenna supports is that small while structure in the center of the field. Only a few of the supports now are used for radio transmission. All of the land under the antenna farm is used for agricultural farming.

We're in love with Niagara County grapes! And the wine that is produced from them! Here are some of the vineyards utilized by Cambria Wine Cellars to produce their various Niagara County wines. On Sunday, 10/1, workers were out busy making the harvest as these vines were loaded!
