It is unfortunate that many folks believe putting up signs is a solution to problems. They are sources of clutter and visual pollution and cause for increased costs and taxes in many cases. One such case in Price Street in Lockport. Traveling east on Price from Pine Street, three signs have been put up due to "neighborhood concern." At the far left in the picture above a red STOP sign is just visible from the camera's distance, a little over a block away. This sign shares a common fault with almost 100 others in the city: It requires traffic on the main through street to stop at an intersection with a secondary street (which also has a STOP sign.) This is generally acknowledged to be a defacto speed control device. It costs city residents as a whole hundreds of dollars yearly in wasted gasoline and worn brakes. But residents demanded the city put up another sign to "warn" motorists of the STOP sign and that is seen circled in the middle of the picture. Then, another sign, nailed to a tree warns of "children." The cost for the city to put up a sign is approximately $100 each. (4/13/06)
