Urban Renewal Magic - Late 70's

The striking photograph below shows the north side of Main Street vacant between Market and Elm during the Urban Renewal trauma Lockport went through during the late 1960's and into the 70's.  Where the field of green is a large number of old stores had been torn down.  The camera is looking west along Main with the Bewley Building dominating the picture.

This particular track was re-developed into the current set of buildings which include the now vacant Niagara Permanent (Key Bank) Building.  Notice west of the Bewley Building on Main the Urban Park Tower mistake had already been constructed at this time.  Instead of placing the subsidized housing apartments about a block away from Main, Urban planners made the tragic decision to use prime retail space for the housing.  It was one of several factors that contributed to the decline of downtown Lockport.  Thanks to Charlene Bower for this photograph.  For an earlier winter view of much of this same stretch, looking northeast instead of west, go to another page here at Lou's Views.    (12/13/99)
