Firefighter's Prayer
When I am called to
duty, God wherever flames may rage,
give me the strength to save some life whatever be its age.
Help me to embrace a little child before it is too late,
Or save an older person from the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert to hear the weakest shout
and quickly and efficiently put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me,
To guard my every neighbor and protect their property.
And if according to your will I have to lose my life,
Please bless with your protecting hand my children and my wife.
Dennis was more
than my Chief, He was my Neighbor and one of my best friends. I respected him for who he
was, and thank him for what he taught and shared with me and my family. Dennis will be
missed, but never forgot. God Bless his Family and the rest of his friends.

She has been enrolled in the Lockport Walk Of Fame as one of the city's outstanding citizens.
Eulogy To Ida Fritz
Lockport knew her as the "flower lady" She was my grandmother. She loved
flowers. She started them from seeds in her basement and in her attic. She cared for them
and made them grow.
She also loved children. She cared for them and made them grow. When I was a child,
my sisters and I used to spend every Saturday with Grandma Fritz. She made us her project.
Like any project she took on, she devoted every ounce of energy to her grandchildren. Of
course she taught us all about the flowers; their names, how to care from them, and even
their personalities.
She taught us about hard work, perseverance, and how both built character. We
learned that there are rewards for great accomplishments. We had many talks about
honesty... long talks about honesty. We were never in doubt about how important it was to
tell the truth. We learned that each compromise you make with the truth takes your soul
one step lower without a way to climb back up.
We had lessons in manners. I remember practicing table manners for a year in order
to be good enough to eat at the Lockport Plaza Restaurant. We learned what was polite and
what was not. Grandma had us walk around her house with books balanced on our heads so we
would learn how to walk with good posture. Posture was important with how you present
yourself. "Sit up, Sue!"
She wanted to fill us with culture and art; all the beautiful things of the world.
Sometimes we weren't very receptive to all that beauty. We used to sit in complete silence
for one full hour in front of the radio while the Texaco Opera Hour was on. That's when we
learned how long an hour was. (Sorry, Grandma) I remember sinking into the plush carpets
of Kleinhans music hall and listening to the Buffalo Philharmonic through the snoring of
my grandfather. We knew the story behind every piece of music. The faces of Beethoven,
Brahms and Bach used to look down on us from plaques on the wall in Grandma Fritz's music
room. There we sang Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas with her. She took us to art galleries
where I saw the portrait of Whistlers Mother. It was very nice, but I needed an
explanation of why some people could just stare at it for hours. I got that explanation. I
was told that the biggest stars of the National Football League took ballet to learn
discipline and balance. Before I knew it, I was taking tap, jazz, and ballet lessons.
It may sound to some like we were subjected to some kind of torture at the hands of
Grandma Fritz, but I was there and loved every minute of it. I believe that just like she
had a secret way with flowers, she had a secret way with children. She had a way of
relating the culture and beauty of the world to them and making it fun.
Our most anticipated event on Saturdays was what Grandma called an apple party. We
would sit around the table and cut thin slices of apples to enjoy in turns. After a
tedious job in the yard, this was our glorious reward. It must be this simple way of
turning something so ordinary into a captivating experience that turned Grandma Fritz into
the pied piper of Grant Street. Long after my sisters and brother had grown, she was
having apple parties with hundreds of neighborhood children. Grandma's back yard became
competition for Nintendo, TV, and even baseball! I've heard many of their stories. She
taught them about honesty. She taught them about music. She taught them about art and
manners.
Lockport benefited from the "flower lady's" gardens. The real treasure
that Grandma Fritz left is with what she gave to the children. We will miss you Grandma,
but you will always be with us.
