Billy Waple died last week. He was a student at DeSales when I was, a year younger. He lived just over the other side of West Avenue from our house on Park Avenue.
In 1946-48, we
attended school in the old manor house while the new school building was erected.
One day the reigning Diocesan leader from Buffalo was on the premises to view the
work-in-progress. Students had been cautioned to be on their best behavior.
Even so, Bill was chasing madly after a classmate, Johnny Bishop, yelling loudly,
"Hey, wait for me, Bishop," as he careened around a corner and almost knocked
over our distinguished visitor, Bishop O'Hara !
Rest in peace, Billy. The good Bishop, and the chagrined Principal, Father
Tye, have gone before you, no doubt waiting for your next move. The school has come and
gone, and returned. You are still a happy memory.
