It's a traditional stone house, the kind that reflects the heritage of the Lockport area where many buildings were built of stone, much of it originally hauled from the dig of the Erie Barge Canal. The beauty at 5903 West Jackson, the home of Karen and Bill Stahli, has all the character of historic stone homes in this area but with some "extra character" on the outside. In the April 1999 early spring view below buds have not yet burst yet children frolic on the front yard. But a closer look, a much closer look...and a much longer look indicates these are no ordinary children.
Playing
in the yard are a classy collection of child mannequins dressed up in the proper clothing
of the season. The folks inside move them around from time-to-time to give the front
and side yard activity variety. Additionally, the kids are put through at least
seasonal changes in clothing.
The scene is a year 'round family favorite for Lockportians.
Lockport's Children
At Play are "watched" by thousands of area motorists who travel
Lockport's north end. Many, going out of their way just to "see what the
children are doing" each day. Their play and clothing change with the season.
Their routines change frequently. We love
them!
Do they have names? Surely they do but such details were not immediately available to the Lockport Page photographer. Passing motorists all have different names for them. But regardless of their names, if any one is absent they are quickly missed.
Let's call the babe here in the convertible..."Little Miss Go-Go."
In the heart of dew we lie
Drowned in brief immortaility
And watch our fair-haired children play.
---From "Hearts and Children", D. G. Campbell
What are
little boys made of?
Frogs and snails
And puppy-dogs' tails,
That's what little boys are made of.
What are
little girls made of?
Sugar and spice
And all things nice,
That's what little girls are made of.
"Traffic on the north end of Lockport is slowing in the usual
spots...
A lot of rubber-necking along West Jackson but movement picks
up past the 5900 block...And...On your drive in this morning...
Watch out for two children in a red sports car!"

Ready For Rain
Outside in April can mean meeting up with April showers. But the children have been well dressed in preparation.
Sun warms up a cool Saturday afternoon along West Jackson Street as these two take time to play with model boats and a skateboard...and "pal around."
Overnight, November 5-6, 2001 two of the children on display to honor firemen and The Red Cross were stolen off the Stahli front porch from their position under the American Flag. Only one was found and able to recover an ordeal in the Lockport Barge Canal. Those responsible have been caught and punished.
