"The Miller White House"
418 Willow

United States Vice-Presidential Candidate, Willliam E. Miller and his family lived here.  It is the only grand "white house" that the long-term Lockport Congressman and national Republican leader lived in.  His run on the GOP presidential ticket with Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater ended in defeat and,  for Miller, retirement from active politics.  The home is one of the grand but tasteful residences along Willow Street, east of Pine.  Most homes along this promenade with old brick sidewalks have a rich history of famous occupants.  Most of these residences are still maintained today in "the circumstances they have been accustomed to."

Mr. Miller (1914-1983) represented this area in the United States House of Representatives from 1951 to 1964. he was elected Chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1961.  In 1964 he was victim of the successful smear attacks run against the Goldwater presidential campaign by Lyndon Johnson who went on to gain election and fame as the "consummate dirty politician."  Johnson claimed that Goldwater "would drop the (Atomic) bomb" on Vietnam if elected.  Thanks to a gullible media and despite Goldwater denials, the charge stuck and was responsible for a near landslide victory for LBJ.  Even the local Lockport Union-Sun & Journal was taken in by the Johnson rhetoric and in a major editorial came out against its hometown candidate.

Mr. Miller was an Assistant Prosecutor of Nazi war criminals at Nuremburg, Germany, 1945-46.  He returned to Lockport to serve here as DA before being elected to Congress.   In 1993 he was inducted into the Lockport "Walk of Fame."

In recent years the Miller family has moved out of Lockport and we've lost track of them.  Following her husband's death, Mrs. Miller moved out of the Willow Street home to a cozy apartment at Millar Place and Locust Streets.  We lost track of her when she moved, we believe, to the south.  Two of the Miller daughters were in the media.   Mary was on Buffalo TV for a time until going into global assignments.   Stephanie made her radio start on WLVL in Lockport and is now heard on national media from time-to-time out of Los Angeles.  Bill Jr. ran for his father's former Congressional seat without success against Democrat incumbent John LaFalce.

Former Neighbor Frank Bredell Comments

In my day it was owned by Joe Volshaw who built many of the houses on Waterman Street. His wife was named Emma.  Joe and Emma's daughter, husband and at least one child lived with them, the Ulriches. Donny Ulrich was a friend of mine and we used to play in the sunroom at the right of the photo.  All in the interests of ancient history.
