When the first homes were built off Lakeview Parkway, Lake Ontario could indeed be seen on clear days. This protected residential area of Lockport is just south of the escarpment and just north off of East Avenue. For those homes at the very north end a view of the lake can be quite clear where trees provide an opening and weather conditions permit visibility to 15 miles.

Not many more than a couple dozen families reside here. There is no through traffic and that wonderful expanse of park right in the middle is highlighted by a large blue spruce tree. The city hospital is just a few blocks to the west as is Washington Hunt School. Just a short walk to the east is the Lockport Town and Country Club. A number of Lockport's "name" families enjoy life in the city enclave of green and calm (at least during the warm weather months).
Spring
In England?
No, It's Spring In Lockport's Carlisle Gardens!
The quiet, dignified charm of upper-middle class England endures here in Lockport. Mostly as it has for over fifty years, now. This upscale housing development in the town on the city's east border was advanced between the World Wars. At the time, use of underground street wiring and a grassy median on most of the curving streets were innovative residential designs. Indeed, "The Gardens" were designed and built long before residential "housing developments" grew the unfavorable image they have today.
The various street names, and the development itself
(Carlisle) are taken from popular English names of the time. This community, with its
colonial street lighting, remains one of Lockport's most desirable areas to live in.
You can even drive on "the left side of the road" here and get away with it (to a point). "Class" is much more than income or social rank and Carlisle Gardens makes that point. (5/8/99)
