On almost every block in Lockport one can see evidence of how residents
can, and do, upgrade their neighborhoods and property values, one home at a time.
While we bemoan a decline in appearances in many of the city's former top neighborhoods due to a conversion of once grand homes to poorly maintained apartment dwellings, the opposite is in evidence at the corner of Millar Place and Waterman Street.
Not far from the modest neighborhood in which "Lockport Boy" Frank Bredell grew up in, is this corner residence. It was once a grocery store. Then a barber shop. Then vacant for many years. At one time a neighborhood store was a neighborhood asset. That was decades ago. Now such commercial buildings tend to downgrade property values. If in use commercially they tend to be gathering spots for punks, drug traffic, and trouble.
Some creative and caring people took the initiative several years ago to convert this dwelling to a home. For those who can recall the former layout which appeared irreversibly commercial--- this was a challenge. But victory can be declared! The home is now a beauty but the nice touch that caught the eye of the Lockport Page photographer was the care applied to the corner street sign. It may be the only such effort in Lockport but what an example of what can be done...when neighborhoods care!
