Lockport is a wonderful place to live.  And, when it comes time, it is an honorable and caring place to depart this life from.  The city and surrounding town have beautiful and historic cemeteries that are appropriate resting places for those of any station in life.  Residents here have a strong spiritual base with supporting family religious traditions.  There are many churches in Lockport to help encourage, correct, and sustain us in life...help console and comfort us at the time of death.   It is entirely appropriate, therefore, that one of Lockport's park areas is set aside to honor Lockportians who have passed on to a new life.  The Memorial Tree Garden is a mainly volunteer effort.   Financial support has come from those who purchased a tree in honor of a loved one.   The location, along the south side of the Erie Barge Canal in the Lowertown District  is beautiful and serene.

"Show me the manner in which a nation or a community cares for its dead.
I will measure exactly the sympathies of its people, their respect for the
laws of the land, and their loyalty to high ideals."
                                      ...William E. Gladstone

Throughout the Tree Garden is an extension of the walking and bike trail along the canal.  The Tree Garden section begins just east of the Lake Avenue Bridge and extends to an area where a fitness section of the canal walk picks up.  Eventually the trail leads to the Widewaters Marina area through more park reservation.
