The park is an example that large amounts of taxpayer monies, environmental bond issues, and the like are not needed to provide a variety of parks to our community. The John Henry Park is a modest specialty park which provides for "growing things." Upkeep is mostly volunteer and park participants are the hundreds who like to grow things but may not have enough property of their own to establish a garden. Above, the American Flag waves in the breeze proudly over this ground of green off Prospect Street on the city's north side.
The Tomatoes are ready for picking!

How It Works
Plots of land in John Henry Park are available for city residents who don't have room from garden land at their current homes. Henry plots are available on a first-come, first-served basis in the Spring of each year. Those who wish to work a plot of land at John Henry Park should contact John Foster, director of the Department of Youth & Recreation at 439-6624. There are rules and regulations that must be agreed to by gardeners. At the beginning of each growing season the city stages an orientation meeting for new and hold-over gardeners. For the year 2000, this meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 27th, at 7 p.m. in the Common Council Chambers in City Hall.
