Work continues through the prime tourist season presenting a terrible picture to those visiting Lockport's historic canal district. But there seems little alternative. We have no idea when the project will be finished and then, when the payoff will be. One local restaurant operator told The Lockport Page on Sunday, 7/30, that his request for a spot in the development has been turned down. (7/31/06)

The Lockport Home Page has been contacted with the suggestion that the preliminary review of the former Harrison Radiator plant off Walnut Street in downtown Lockport might be in error. The Phase One Environmental Assessment reportedly indicated there's not any serious issue here. However, it's said that Harrison employees may have dumped hazardous chemicals into the ground over many years. The area pictured below is of special interest. We're told there should be extensive ground testing and sampling. Also an old gas company facility was next door. The City just took ownership of the property for $250,000 when the developer who bought it from General Motors defaulted on a loan.

According to public papers, the Niagara County District Attorney has placed 36 Animal Cruelty charges against Pets Plus on West Avenue. The charges stem from a raid on the retailer, July 11th. The accusations are being contested by the establishment's attorney. (7/28/06)

Heard on The Street: A quartet of Senior ladies were recalling the good old days over breakfast at The Sugar Shack. Each was noting her favorite recollection. What one matron missed most was the "party line" telephone service. Her family was on a 4-party line and she enjoyed "listening in" on everybody's conversations. We're talking 1940's. (7/29/06)

This is the neighborhood. Lockport Police say four teen boys raped a 15-year old girl at 205 Lock Street. The four were arrested but released without bail when a representative of one of the accused claimed the arrests were racially motivated. The four suspects are black, the girl is white. One account states a "broom handle" was used as part of the hour-plus ordeal. The city is in shock. (7/27/06)

It looks like pollution. Something is in the ground that crews are doing a big dig for at East Avenue and Washburn Streets. The property is a former Sunoco gasoline station. The gas tanks are being removed and the building is reported slated for demolition to be replaced by a Family Video outlet. The video rental, part of a chain coming to WNY, should be up and running by Christmas, we're told.(7/29/06)

Now, the Big Challenge. The exterior frame work, paving, and basics are pretty much complete in mid-July for Ulrich's City Centre complex between Walnut and Main Street in downtown Lockport. Most units are vacant and interior work awaits orders from future tenants. It appears it will take some time. First tenants for this section, a real estate company, will be moving in at summer's end, we're told, and others will be coming in October. The view above looks southwest at the building frames along Walnut Street opening into the interior of the Centre. The situation along Main Street is much the same but with a couple tenants. David Caddy gone! As reported several months ago here, David Cadillac-GMC has gone out of business at South Transit Road and Dysinger Road in Lockport. The GMC dealership was picked up by Smith, across the road. The car wash business on the former David property is shut, also. David now has a Ford dealership in Williamsville on Transit. The Lockport property is available for lease. (7/27/06)
